Canada has made a sudden add to their defensive group after defenseman Shea Theodore exited the team's first game against Sweden due to an injury suffered that ended his tournament.
NHL insider Chris Johnston has revealed that Dallas Stars defenseman Thomas Harley will be headed to Boston as an emergency call-up for the Canadians.
While a player can't be replaced at this stage with just a single injury, if a second player is injured through the tournament, the team can add another player if needed, which would be Harley.
Harley was one of two players mentioned earlier by Elliotte Friedman as options for Team Canada alongside Toronto Maple Leafs defender Chris Tanev.
Harley, 23, has nine goals and 29 points in 53 games played this season for Dallas.
While Thomas Harley can be a standby player for the Canadians, the injury to Shea Theodore doesn't mean he gets to be on the ice.
As per the tournament rules, while an emergency player is allowed to be added in case of injury, said player cannot play until a second injury occurs.
Elliotte Friedman explained the exact rules outlined.
So Harley will need to wait for another injury to get a chance to play, and then another player can be added as the backup such as Tanev.
Originally snubbed by Canada, Tanev may still have a chance to make the team, but would mean a decimation of Canada's defensive roster.
Luckily for the Canadians, they have the depth to miss key pieces and still be a potential winning team.
It will be a wait-and-see for Chris Tanev if he will get the chance to represent his country, or even if he'll be rostered if things go worse.
