So it looks like Nick Robertson will indeed be staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs for another season after all. On Monday's First Up on TSN 1050, Darren Dreger stated he believes that the 22-year-old restricted free agent could reach a deal in time before the start of Toronto training camp.
The 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Nick Robertson's time with Toronto has been flooded by injury and he has only 87 appearances at the NHL level to date. A player who has flashed promise at times, he just hasn't been able to secure a clear roster spot.
Last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Nick Robertson played in 56 games, netting 14 goals and adding 13 assists for 27 points. He averaged 11:23 per night of ice time, as the coaches are using him in a bottom-six role thus far in his career, which has made him unhappy.
Darren Dreger felt the Leafs' depth chart on the left side is thin, and guys like Matthew Knies, Bobby McMann, Connor Dewar, and maybe even Pontus Holmberg, will all be fighting for a spot. That leaves room potentially for Nick Robertson to slide in and take on more of a role with the team.
Darren Dreger also mentioned limited league-wide interest in the services of Nick Robertson likely contributed to his reasoning for sticking around with Toronto.
