Nick Robertson is a young Toronto Maple Leafs forward who shows a lot of promise. However, in his four years playing for the team, he has only appeared in 87 games, with just over eleven minutes of ice time on average. Hoping to get a better shot at the NHL level, Robertson has asked for a trade from the franchise.
After his requests broke into mainstream hockey news, several NHL fans hopped on the train to mock up their own Nick Robertson trade. One of the latest sends hi, along with Pontus Holmberg, to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In exchange, Toronto would receive Lars Eller, Matt Nieto, and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
Like Nick Robertson, Pontus Holmberg is a younger player with little NHL experience. The 25-year-old forward has played 91 games across two seasons, scoring 30 career points.
Alternatively, Both Lars Eller and Matthew Nieto have played in the league for over a decade. Nieto, now 31, has 203 points in 673 games. Eller, a Washington Capitals Stanley Cup winner, turned 35 in May and will look to expand upon his 402 career points and 1,036 games.
Both Eller and Nieto have a longer history of success in the league, but as such, they have gotten closer to the end of their career.
Given their diminishing marginal returns, Pittsburgh may prefer to keep younger players in depth positions than rely on players past their prime. Regardless, this could never work if Robertson is unwilling to join the Penguins.
