While the Toronto Maple Leafs and the player's camp both expressed interest in renewing their association, nothing has been announced yet.
Many teams could enter the derby if he ends up being available, including one of his former teams: the Detroit Red Wings.
Bertuzzi was drafted by the Red Wings in 2013 and played nearly seven seasons with the organization. He still has ties with many players on the team, including his dear friend, the captain Dylan Larkin.
At the 2023 trade deadline, Bertuzzi was dealt to the Boston Bruins, and Larkin got emotional when he talked about it in a press conference:
The Red Wings have a lot of cap space, with over $30 million available. However, they also have notable restricted free agents to deal with, such as Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider.
They should have enough money to bring Bertuzzi back, but Steve Yzerman will need to evaluate his options, as other interesting players will be available on the market, including Jonathan Marchessault.
If they make key acquisitions this summer, they could make a splash next season and end their eight-year playoff drought.
