The 22-year-old blueliner decided to try his luck with dropping the gloves tonight and things went pretty well for himself. He challenged a hardened NHL veteran in Filip Forsberg, although the Predators winger isn't particularly known for his physical play.
The fight was far from the most important part of the game however. The Red Wings are in a tight playoff race for the final spot in the Eastern conference. Tensions within the team have been at season-high levels for the Red Wings, leading to teammates having to be separated during a recent practice. This was largly caused by the team's recent losing streak, which has significantly hurt their playoff chances. Tonight's game won't help either as the Predators extender their franchise-record point streak to seventeen games with the 1-0 victory over the Red Wings. After the game both Seider and Forsberg addressed the fight.
You know it had to be bad when even Forsberg said the fight didn't go well. He admitted that the young Red Wings defenseman got the best of him in what was just Forsberg's third career fight in his ten years in the NHL.
With the loss, the Red Wings drop to 36-29-6, giving them 78 points in 71 games played. The team technically still has the second wild card spot but they have the slimmest of leads, edging out the Washington Capitals by a single point. However, the Capitals have two games in hand on Detroit, giving them ample opportunity to take that playoff spot from them. Furthermore, the Red Wings are 3-7-0 over their last ten games. They will need to round into form if they are going to hold onto that playoff spot. Right now that is not looking very likely.
