It's always sad when a young life is taken, and that life has been taken due to a long illness. In the world of hockey, athletes are typically described with words of resilience and strength, and even such traits sometimes fail to save one from the terrible outcome of fighting cancer. The death of such a young and committed athlete is a bright signal about the fragility of life.
Former NCAA hockey player Chad Demers is no longer with us, as he lost his courageous six-year battle with cancer at the young age of 33. News came from Hockey World Wide via Instagram, and this unfortunate news sent shockwaves through both fans and the hockey community. Demers was highly regarded for his tough determination on and off the ice, and his fight was a testament to his character.
In 2018, Chad Demers was diagnosed with cancer. With the many challenges presented by his diagnosis, he remained active in the sport he loved. To continue in the community of hockey within which he worked, strength was given to him, and he faced the biggest battle of his life with the grace and perseverance of a true champion.
Most recently, he was the assistant coach at Augustana University; he started this position during the summer of 2023. His love for hockey never diminished, even up to his last year, as he was dedicated to helping mold the next generation of future talent. His memory and contributions to the team will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Chad Demers was, in fact, a very valued player, coach, and most importantly, part of this hockey community. We want to extend our thoughts and deepest sympathies to his wife, children, family, and friends during this extremely difficult time.
