A Few Interesting Expansion Destinations Have Emerged For the NHL
The NHL has seen great success with its two most recent expansion projects. The Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights are both among the highest-earning teams in the league.
Friedman on TJMS says Vegas and Seattle are two high revenue generating teams, they're not at the top, but they're close to the top and that's why Friedman thinks Bettman is fighting for Arizona and that's why he's wondering about Houston or Austin or Toronto #2.
Friedman doesn't think expansion is necessarily imminent, but he also believes they (NHL executives) will possibly do it at some point because of the success Seattle and Vegas have had.
Marek isn't so sure a second team in Toronto is possible, especially with all the money the Leafs pay in revenue sharing.
Due to the geographic locations of Vegas and Seattle, it has also renewed commissioner Gary Bettman's faith in the fabled Arizona Coyotes franchise.
With Austin already hosting the Texas Stars AHL team, it could be a logical transition for the NHL. Houston, on the other hand, is the largest untapped market in the United States. Adding a second team to the greater Toronto area could be a fun Canadian spark to the league as well.
It will be interesting to see which route the league takes next.
