The Leafs have a lot of uncertainty about their future amid the game 5 loss to the Florida Panthers last night.
In a tweet via CapFriendly, the Leafs have:
What this means is that the Leafs need to resign at minimum three of those players to get a full roster without AHLers and will likely sign more. With this summer's UFA class being rather weak (headlined by Michael Bunting and Tyler Bertuzzi), we will likely see Bunting walk for more money.
In addition to this, the Leafs will have a difficult time moving some of their current assets given how many of them have trade protection.
Given how difficult it is to build a roster in the modern NHL with the salary cap, it begs the question of if a hard cap is beneficial to the league. If a team like Toronto, which plays in the largest market, is not able to build the best team they possibly can, it may be preventing the league from gaining revenue.
At the end of the day, Kyle Dubas has a lot of work cut out for himself and it will be difficult to build a better team than the one they had this season.
