Rumours about Pierre-Luc Dubois were rampant this summer until he signed a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets. Since then, there has been less speculation about his future and his desire to stay in Winnipeg.
For his part, Dubois doesn't seem to be bothered by it. He admits he speculates about other players himself when there are no details:
"When we negotiate, not much is said. It leaves room for interpretation as well as rumours. Everyone speculates about what might happen, without really knowing. I do it too"
Many fans believe that Dubois wants to play in Montreal at all costs and that if it does not happen by way of a transaction, it will be during his full autonomy in 2024. However, the main interested party explained why he didn't sign long-term in Winnipeg:
"I could see myself in Winnipeg for the future, but this summer I didn't have the answer yet. Everybody wants a quick answer, everything has to happen now, but it's my life at the end of the day. Six, seven or eight years is a long time and it can lead to the end of my career. It's not only for me, but also for my family. It was an important decision that I wasn't ready to make this summer. I wasn't 100 per cent sure of my decision and in these moments I prefer to take my time. If the right decision is Winnipeg, then it will be Winnipeg and I will be happy. We'll see about the future."
These are wise words from a player who seems undecided, but who will put his and his family's happiness ahead of the paycheck. In the end, winning the Stanley Cup remains his most ultimate goal.
It's not the amount of money that's going to keep me up at night. What keeps me up at night is whether or not I've won the Stanley Cup at the end of my career. Whether it's a one-year, three-year or eight-year contract, the goal is the same and my head is in the same place.
