Elliotte Friedman revealed the newest insights on what exactly is going on with Lehner and the Golden Knights.
Friedman's comment made it plain that not all is well between the veteran goaltender and the Golden Knights.
"So this is what we can tell you," said Friedman on Saturday night's NHL broadcast. "There were 2 reports yesterday that he's out for the rest of the year and having surgery, and I had heard the same rumors. Vegas has disputed that and today when he didn't practice they said that they were hopeful that he would play tomorrow night or be in the lineup tomorrow night. Nobody's talking but this is the best I can piece together. I think what's happened is Lehner, who's playing hurt, was upset at some of the criticism he was receiving and also being pulled the other night and I believed he informed the Golden Knights on Thursday night that he was going to have surgery and shut it down."
Of course, if the Golden Knights miss the playoffs, Lehner's absence won't matter, but wouldn't his presence boost their chances?
The Golden Knights seem to agree and have been working behind the scenes to solve their new challenge.
"I think in the last 24 to 48 hours there have been conversations between Lehner, the team, his agents, and just everybody involved trying to see if there was a solution to all this that would have him in the lineup," said Friedman. "I guess we're gonna find out tomorrow night and we'll see for sure where all this is going but that's the best information that I can piece together for you today."
Lehner has apparently had a significant injury, a fractured knee cap, since March, so it's easy to see why he could be sensitive to criticism right now considering the sacrifices he is making. Regardless of how this all plays out, Friedman took the opportunity to wish Lehner well.
