The Boston Bruins surprise everyone by placing this veteran on waivers

Several players are in the running today. Thirty-three-year-old forward Craig Smith of the Boston Bruins, Austin Czarnik of the Red Wings, Jason Demers of the Oilers, Danila Zhuravlyov of the Avalanche and Nikita Soshnikov of the Islanders were placed on the waivers.
In the case of the last two, they were placed on the unconditional waivers in an effort to end their contracts.
Craig Smith had four points in 17 games with Boston this season, Czarnik had three points in 11 games with the Red Wings and Jason Demers had nine assists in 24 games with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
