Brian Burke Calls Out Several NHL Teams for Struggle with LGBTQ Acceptance
When Ivan Provorov made the controversial decision to boycott the Philadelphia Flyers Pride warmup, it was supposed to spark more passion and pride for the marginalized community.
Instead, it prompted NHL team to cancel their pride nights outright, a pretty telling move to the fundamental values of the sport.
The New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Chicago Blackhawks were the main perpetrators, and it appears that for former GM Brian Burke, enough is enough.
Burke's son is a member of the LGBTQ community, and he has since become an avid voice in the Hockey is for Everyone movement.
In an interview with NBC Sports, Burke went all-out in calling out these teams and voicing his support for a more open sport.
There shouldn't even need to be a fight here, as the debate around rights for the LGBTQ community is asinine. Unfortunately, in a sport with such an old-fashioned culture, we are still sparking these movements.
Hopefully change will come for the better soon.
