With teams looking to shape their roster as they head into the last part of the season after the 4 Nations Face-Off, it seems the Calgary Flames are getting things started as they look to finish strong in 2025.
NHL Insider Frank Seravalli revealed that the team intends to place Tyson Barrie on waivers in order to shore up some roster and cap room.
Barrie, 33, has struggled and managed to find minimal playing time in Calgary, with one goal and two assists in 13 games.
The former standout offensive defenseman has seen a bit of a fall from grace in recent years, and has bounced around four different teams since being drafted 64th overall in 2009 by the Colorado Avalanche.
With the Avalanche is where he shined. In 484 games he had 75 goals and 232 assists including a career-best 59 points in 2018-19.
If teams are looking for an insurance policy, Barrie is somewhat serviceable offensively however his defensive game has always been a sore spot for the blueliner.
While it is not official yet, Barrie going on waivers would give teams like New Jersey, Vegas, and Dallas some insurance come playoff time, and with how many injuries those teams have dealt with; it might not be a bad option.
At one point, Barrie was one of the league's most consistent offensive defenders. Over his 14-year career he averages 11 goals and 40 assists per 82 games.
Barrie was part of the trade that sent himself, and forward Alex Kerfoot to the Maple Leafs for Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen, and a 3rd round pick. Initially brought in to add an offensive spark, he was anything but.
In his lone season with Toronto, he had five goals and 34 assists but his lack of defensive energy and aggressiveness often earned him the backlash of fans and analysts alike.
It remains to be seen if any team is going to claim Barrie, however once he goes on waivers at 2PM ET, then anyone willing to acquire him has 24 hours to do so.
