Hockey Canada and Wayne Gretzky controversy clarified after new report on gold medal incident

There was a bit of controversy outside of the 2026 Olympic gold medal game between the United States and Canada when Wayne Gretzky was prohibited from being allowed to join Canada ahead of their game to give some motivation and well wishes.

Many thought there may be some politics at play given the recent circumstances involving Gretzky, however we have a lot more clarity to the situation and it's still a bit surprising.

According to a report from Elliotte Friedman, the reason Gretzky was unable to get to the ice was not because of anything barring him from it, but simply the fact that security personnel didn't really recognize him:

To be fair to the security personnel, they have had thousands of faces and names to remember regarding clearance and if the person on duty was unfamiliar with hockey and was strictly going off their scheduled assignment -- there's going to be misunderstandings.

But it does make you wonder if the old guard is changing, and those who would have once been recognized all around the world are slowly being replaced by the current stars. Italy isn't necessarily a hotbed for ice hockey, so being able to tell who is who might be a shock.

To us, it seems like a travesty to let the greatest player ever not be able to celebrate with his country however it would be akin to Italian fans going insane if we didn't recognize say; Gianluigi Buffon -- their greatest keeper and one of the most recognizable faces in sports.

It's all a simple case of cultures overlapping and things not going as smoothly as one would hope. This wasn't some personal vendetta against Gretzky, and it's great to know that both Gretzky and Hockey Canada are able to clear this up and move past things.
