Last night, a massive Pacific Division showdown between the Vancouver Canucks and the Los Angles Kings could've changed the landscape of the division.
With a win, the Kings would've surpassed the Vegas Golden Knights for first place, whereas the Canucks would end up in third, passing the Calgary Flames.
After an intense night, the Canucks won 4-2 against the Kings in a great effort from captain Quinn Hughes, who scored two points in the win.
In a bit of a dark spot in the Canucks' win, an unfortunate incident occurred involving Tanner Jeannot and Brock Boeser.
In the first period, Boeser had to leave the game after a dangerous hit to the head from Jeannot.
The Canucks forward was skating in the neutral zone with the puck, and immediately after he got rid of it, Jeannot skated towards him and raised his shoulders at the last second to hit him in the head.
After the hit, both players returned to the locker room: Boeser, with an injury, and Jeannot, with a game misconduct.
When players receive a match penalty, the NHL's Department of Player Safety automatically reviews the incident.
This means that unless they decide he doesn't deserve to be punished for the hit, Jeannot will either be suspended or pay a fine for what he did to Boeser.
It will be interesting to see how the NHL responds given their shaky track record with punishing these types of hits.
Tanner Jeannot has struggled for the first 15 games in his first season with the Los Angeles Kings.
Following a tough stint with the Tampa Bay Lightning, he currently only has two points, including one goal with the Kings.
Unfortunately, last night, he had to leave after only 1:12 minutes on the ice, leaving him not many chances of adding points to his record. But it's not unexpected given the misconduct, he didn't give himself a chance to get any scoring going.
As for Boeser, who scored 40 goals last season, has 11 points in 12 games, including six goals.
If he were to miss time, it would be a huge blow to the Canucks, especially considering Pettersson's disappointing start to the season.
The Department of Player Safety is expected to announce a verdict on Friday. The league's response will be closely watched, as it sets terrible precedents seemingly every week.
