With the 4 Nations Face-Off now in the rearview mirror, the focus is now on NHL teams getting back to business. Though, for the Florida Panthers it might be a lot more difficult if they have to do it without Matthew Tkachuk.
The star forward was injured in the tournament, and while it didn't seem concerning, some recent comments from his brother Brady don't bring any positivity whatsoever, and brings with it a lot of concern for the reigning Stanley Cup Champions:
If anyone knows how serious things are is his own brother, and if Tkachuk is going to miss an extended period of time, what does that mean for the rest of the Atlantic?
It's unfortunate that Tkachuk's potentially dealing with a serious injury, and if he can't come back right away that leaves the Atlantic ripe for the taking.
Toronto is only three points back, Tampa Bay is five. Both teams are going to be chomping at the bit if Tkachuk is out, and with the trade deadline approaching and both teams expected to make a play, it gives Florida rough path to a repeat.
Originally injured during the team's second game against Canada, Tkachuk sat out against the Swedes in anticipation for the Finals. Injured again in that game, it's a sign that the tournament brings a lot of risks even though it's a two-week span.
We've already seen several injuries in the tournament, with Auston Matthews dealing with an injury keeping him out of the Sweden game, Shea Theodore got hurt the first game, missing the rest of the tournament, and Team Sweden was ravaged by a locker room illness.
There's going to need to be a system in place regarding injuries in time for the next World Cup in 2028 and it would give teams the chance to rest players as opposed to putting them out there at risk of injury (though, you'd have to be crazy to think Tkachuk would miss the game but it led to his downfall).
It's going to be interesting to see the extent of Tkachuk's injury, and the next few weeks are going to be exciting to see the fight for Atlantic supremacy becomes even tighter than it was before.
