The NHL offseason is filled with rumors and deals that are close but end up not coming to be. Deals fall apart for a countless number of reasons and most of the time fans never get to find out why.
Today fans and media got an inside look at a trade that almost was from an insider and a player involved.
Player Confirms A Rejected Trade Reported By Pierre LeBrun
This summer a major trade was rumored to be going down between the Philadelphia Flyers and Saint Louis Blues. The details weren't known at the time but every insider said there were big pieces moving. Then the deal mysteriously fell apart. All that was reported was that a player with a no-trade clause denied the trade. Until now we didn't know who that player was.
According to a report from Pierre LeBrun recently the player in question was Torey Krug. He reported this but it hadn't been confirmed by other sources right away. In an interview today Krug was asked about and responded to the report. Here is what he had to say.
I chose to stay here. I want to be a part of this locker room; I love playing for this city and wearing the logo.»
It makes me anxious. You obviously don't like hearing things like that. I have kids, a family, a lot to think about. But in the end, as I said, I want to play here and wear [the Blues' jersey]. We have a good group in the locker room, and we have a good feeling about this year. I think we can turn things around quickly.
Krug ultimately was happy with the Blues and playing with the group in Saint Louis. After Krug made these comments former Philadelphia Flyer and current Blues captain Brayden Schenn was asked about the situation.
He didn't want to be traded to a team where he felt he had less chance of winning, let's put it that way. Philadelphia is in a rebuilding phase, and we think we can be competitive here.
It sounds as though Krug and Schenn both believe there is more work to be done for this Blues group.
Blues Looking To Rebound After Disappointing Season
The Saint Louis Blues finished 23rd in the NHL in the 2022-23 NHL season. This was a major disappointment for a team that had aspirations to compete for the Stanley Cup. Now after some major offseason moves the Blues are setting their sights on bouncing back.
Torey Krug and new Blues captain Brayden Schenn will be a big part of this improvement. They will also need a bounce-back season from goaltender Jordan Binnington. Kevin Hayes, Kasperi Kapanen, and Jake Neighbours will all also need major improvements in production to bring this team back up to its former glory.
