The Oilers goaltending situation has been so dire this year that the team was essentially forced to put Jack Campbell on waivers and demote him to the AHL. Since then, rumors of the team going out and acquiring a goalie via trade have exploded.
The team has been linked to numerous goalies including Jordan Binnington, Jake Allen, Carter Hart, and even Jusse Saros. Whoever the Oilers decide to take, a trade could be complicated and costly for the team that was expected to lead the pacific division this year.
NHL Insider Kevin Weekes believes the team should be doing everything in their power to trade for a goalie, but not one of the ones listed above. Instead, he thinks the team should be targeting Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
Weeks discussed the situation on TSN 1050's Overdrive show, in which he noted that he would "move heaven and earth" and "pay the moon, the stars, and the sun" to bring in Swayman if he was in Ken Holland's shoes. Its an interesting look into Weekes' philosophy as he has been trying to break into a front office role in the league.
Notably, the Oilers were reportedly asking the Bruins about Swayman's availability this offseason, but nothing ever came from that and those rumors have not been confirmed. However, we do know the Oilers were at the very least looking to upgrade in net over the summer and they continue to do so as their season unravels.
The Oilers take on the Seattle Kraken tonight at 10PM EST. Stuart Skinner is expected to be the starting goaltender.
