Multiple Trade Proposals Emerge Between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames have reportedly been in trade negotiations on and off for more or less the full season. Now a few options have emerged for the both teams to consider.
Leafs Trade Options For Flames Defenseman Tanev
New Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has repeatedly stated that he would like to bolster his team's blueline. Injuries have decimated an already-thin Leafs backend, leading to defensive breakdowns for the team.
One trade proposal has the Leafs trading for Flames defenseman Chris Tanev. In exchange, the Flames would get Leafs prospect Fraser Minten and a 2024 3rd round pick. The Leafs are in win-now mode and the Flames are rebuilding. As a result, this trade seems fairly reasonable. Both sides could walk away from this one feeling good about it, although the Leafs will look back on any trade unfavorably if they lose in the 1st round of the playoffs again.
However, a trade for Tanev might not be so simple. Regardless, the Flames are going to have to retain some salary to make a deal work. Another proposal would be more expensive for Toronto, but includes significant salary retention from multiple teams.
To Toronto:
Chris Tanev (66% retained)
To Calgary:
Nick Abruzzese
2025 3rd round pick (TOR)
2026 1st round pick (TOR)
To 3rd team (For salary retention on Tanev)
2024 4th round pick (TOR)
The Leafs might feel a lot better about this one since they do not have to give up Minten, but overall it is significantly more expensive due to the draft picks going the other way. Nick Abruzzese is not nearly as high profile of a prospect though.
Toronto Maple Leafs To Consider Trading Nylander For Huberdeau?
Of course, in reality the Leafs have a near infinite number of ways to make a trade with the Flames work. One Leafs fan account made the following trade proposal on X.
TOR gets:
Chris Tanev (50% - $2.25M)
Nikita Zadorov (50% - $1.875M)
CGY gets:
2024 1st (TOR)
2026 3rd (TOR)
John Klingberg
Nick Abruzzese
Conor Timmins
It seems like a high price to pay for what the Leafs are getting back, but this trade proposal is potentially a lot less insulting than this next idea.
To Toronto
Jonathan Huberdeau (50% retained)
To Calgary
William Nylander
The Leafs have been adamant that they are working on a deal for William Nylander. However, a deal has not materialized yet and it could be becoming harder and harder to make work as Nylander's career-best season continues. Huberdeau on the other hand clearly could use a change of scenery. The question is whether or not Calgary would be willing to retain so much of his contract given how many years are left on it. Would Treliving even want such a contract on his team? You be the judge.
