The New Jersey Devils are in an interesting position this season, being just outside of being a true playoff contender while having the talent and skill to potentially get them there. They still need to make some major moves to shore up a competitive roster, and it appears they are looking to do so.
NHL insider Eklund of Hockey Buzz has revealed that there is significant interest from the Devils to acquire John Gibson from the Ducks. Eklund reports the following.
The Devils need to make sure not to sell the farm on a risky bet that they are going to contend for a playoff spot this year, and according to Eklund, it sounds like they may have to. They would never want to trade away the likes of Luke Hughes or Simon Nemec, two faces they are betting will help the franchise get over the hump.
The Devils do have prospects they could move, though, along with a first-round pick in 2024. A potential trade might look like the following.
Holtz is a 7th overall pick who is finding his way in the NHL and has recorded 13 points in 27 games in the Devils' bottom six. He has a ton of upside, which may be a good sell for the Ducks.
Casey was the Devils' 2022 second-rounder and is playing top minutes for the Michigan Wolverines this season. He is a promising prospect who could make an NHL debut at the end of the collegiate season, however, the Devils likely don't have room for him.
It's not certain how likely a deal is for the immediate future, however, it seems like it is getting closer by the day.
