Still unsigned, and with reportedly no movement on that front, Nylander presents an interesting issue for the Leafs' current cap situation.
Nylander, worth anywhere in the 9 million range, has not budged for the Leafs' GM.
A recent rumour has arisen that would send Nylander to the Islanders, for a meagre return.
The trade would send Nylander, and defenseman Timothy Liljegren, AND a second-round pick, to the Islanders for Oliver Wahlstrom, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and a pick.
This is a slap in the face to Nylander's and his natural talents. Nylander is a smooth skating, goal-scoring forward who scored 87 points in 82 games last season. Not to mention, Nylander has been one of the Leafs' few reliable scoring talents in the playoffs, with 40 points in 50 career playoff games.
A trade for Nylander would be tricky, but it wouldn't be a terrible move necessarily. It could help the Leafs' with their cap situation, especially if the reports that Nylander won't budge on his number are true.
However, this is entirely dependent on the right offer being on the table. Anything even worth looking at should include a star player, one who scores at least at a similar pace to Nylander.
If that's not feasible, a player and first-round picks are a must for a deal.
Leafs fans, despite their often criticism of Nylander, can be assured that Treliving won't make this deal. However, the issue of signing Nylander is still in the air.
