Today Marchand learned the hard way not to mess with him. The 35-year-old forward embarrassed himself today when he got involved in an altercation with Devils rookie defenseman Simon Nemec. While Nemec isn't exactly tall by NHL standards, his 6'1" frame is somewhat imposing compared to Marchand who stands at just 5'9". This size mismatch lead to the Bruins captain easily being taken down by the defender, who slammed him to the ice in the confrontation.
Marchand would walk away the victor however as the Bruins picked up the victory in large part due to the efforts of their goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
While he has never gotten a true shot at a 1A type of role thanks to his brilliant goalie partner Linus Ullmark, Swayman has proved time and time again that he is among the NHL's best goalies. Tonight was no exception as he earned his 3rd shutout of the season.
Swayman improved his record to 13-3-6, lowered his goals-against-average to 2.38, and boosted his save percentage to .922. He is now second among all NHL goalies in save percentage only behind Connor Hellebuyck for goalies with a minimum of 18 games played.
