Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has just publicly apologized following his recent release from a Paris jail for alleged crimes he committed during the 2024 Olympics.

It is no secret the 2024 Paris Olympics has been one of the most polarizing sporting events of the last decade. However, one Australian field hockey player recently became the face of the latest controversy surrounding the Summer Games.

28-year-old Tom Craig was being followed by police who suspected him of a crime.

Craig decided to try evading police forces on foot. As a result, the player had his participant's rights stripped and was banned from further Olympic events and privileges.

"Australian hockey player Tom Craig attempted to run away from police trying to arrest him [...] on the streets of Paris before realising he could not escape pursuing officers.

The Kookaburras veteran has had his Olympic rights stripped from him, been banned from the athletes village and told he does not have the right to march in the closing ceremony."

Tom Craig spent 18 hours in a Paris jail contemplating his actions. Despite calls for a harsh punishment, Craig was released with only a warning. The Australian hockey player will not face any fines nor a criminal record as a result of his alleged illicit actions.

Upon his release, Tom Craig spoke to the public during a press release. In this, he apologized for his behavior to the public and his team, ensuring that his actions were not related to them at all.

"I'd firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the past 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions. My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport, and the Australian Olympic team. I've embarrassed you all. I'm truly sorry."

Though he did not receive any criminal record or consequences outside a day in jail, Tom Craig has lost Olympic rights and has likely faced enough consequences as a first-time offender. Hopefully, however, he and other Olympians do not make the same mistake.
