The Toronto Maple Leafs are off to a solid start in the 2023-24 season, but if they finally want to make a deep run into the post-season, it appears they're aware they need to make a big deal.

Samsonov on the way out?

According to a recent report, there is speculation of a potential blockbuster that would send goaltender Ilya Samsonov to the Arizona Coyotes.

Trade chatter reveals that the Arizona Coyotes are in talks to send defenseman Matt Dumba, goalie Connor Ingram, and a 2024 3rd-round pick to Toronto. In return, the Coyotes would receive T.J. Brodie, who would indeed have to waive his no-trade clause, goaltender Ilya Samsonov, prospect Nick Moldenhauer, and a coveted 1st round pick in 2024.

On the surface, this is an intriguing deal, as it would cement Joseph Woll as the Leafs full-time starter, while giving them another physical presence in Matt Dumba on the blue line.

A blockbuster deal

With limited cap room, the Leafs are limited in what they can do before the trade deadline this season, but this deal would give them a reliable backup, a physical presence on defense and would help their depth going forward.

Ultimately, it's a move that would rely on Brodie waiving his no-trade clause, but if he can do that, this is a move that would improve the Leafs overall, even if it would mean giving up a prospect and a coveted first-round draft pick.
