Boston Bruins legend and Hall of Famer sadly passes away
The NHL is in mourning today, as news has broken out of the tragic passing of Hall of Famer Murray Costello, who has been around the game for many decades.
A former player of the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and Detroit red Wings has tragically passed away. Murray Costello has sadly lost his life, after being involved in the game both on and off the ice for many many years.
Murray Costello only played in the NHL as a player for four seasons, however it was how he impacted the game off the ice that made him a true legend in the sport. He affected positively so many people in the game, so he will be terribly missed.
"The National Hockey League mourns the passing of Murray Costello, whose service to hockey, both in Canada and at the international level, over a seven-decade career fundamentally impacted the game," the NHL said in a statement. "Following a four-season playing career in the NHL, Costello earned induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005 as a builder for his transformational leadership of both the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and Hockey Canada, and his vision and passion drove both the establishment of the IIHF Women's World Championship and the addition of women's hockey to the Olympics.
"Additionally, Canada's success at the world junior level is a direct result of Costello's vision in the early 80's to establish a program of excellence that would produce 10 gold medals during his tenure as President of Hockey Canada from 1979 to 1998, including five straight from 1993 to 1997. We send our deepest condolences to Costello's family and many friends in the game all over the world."
Murray Costello scored a total of 13 goals and 19 assists in his 163 career games, and players are the ones that fans cherish the most and get to know the most, however the games wouldn't be played if it weren't for the many men and women behind the scenes, and that's exactly where Costello was after his life as a player. The hockey world was in a better place with Costello at the helms, such as when he was in charge of Hockey Canada, and it will be tough to replicate it without him. Rest in peace Murray, you have been and will always be loved.
