Eric Staal retires from the NHL, Carolina Hurricanes to retire his number
Longtime NHLer Eric Staal is signing a one-day contract to retire as a Carolina Hurricane, the team also retiring his number #12.
Eric Staal, a Stanley Cup champion with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, will retire as a Hurricane after 18 NHL seasons.
Drafted second overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Staal, one of the Hurricanes most productive players, is second all-time in franchise history in Goals (322), Assists (453) & Points (775). Staal won the cup with Carolina in 2006.
Staal's brothers Jordan and Jared have also played in Carolina alongside Eric, the latter the Hurricanes current captain.
After 12 seasons in Carolina, Staal also played with the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens & Florida Panthers.
Staal is a six-time NHL All-Star. He finishes his NHL career with 455 goals, 608 assists & 1063 points in 1365 games played.
Internationally, Staal won a gold medal with Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and at the 2007 World Champions. Staal also competed at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
