After weeks of speculation, things are heating up on the Patrik Laine trade front, even though new GM Don Waddell can't yet make a deal as the star forward remains in the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program. However, when he is eventually released, the team are going to be aggressive in shopping the 26-year old, and now a report from The Athletic's Aaron Portzline has revealed what the team are asking for him.
This report comes as a surprise to many, as it was expected the team would look for an NHL ready prospect/roster player to help them push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2024/25, but according to the report, they will instead by after draft picks and prospects.
With a young core led by David Jiricek, Adam Fantilli, Cayden Lindstrom and others, it makes sense that the team would look to continue building for the future, but after signing Sean Monahan this summer, they could be looking to win now.
It's unclear at this point when Laine will be released from the Player Assistance Program, but if it happens with plenty of time ahead of the regular season, teams will no doubt have packages ready for Columbus.
