Leon Draisaitl's possible extension in Edmonton, per Source
During a phone interview on the Hello Hockey Show, NHL Insider David Pagnotta revealed what an extension for Leon Draisaitl with the Edmonton Oilers could look like.
Leon Draiastaitl is unquestionably one of the most productive players currently in the NHL. Despite the high level of talent on the ice, he currently sits at third for most career points in the last decade.
Yet, the Oilers also have Connor McDavid, who is often considered the best hockey player in the world. As such, Edmonton has not prioritized re-signing Draisaitl this summer, leading to speculation that he may be off to a new NHL home following the upcoming season.
"With Leon Draisaitl's next contract, cost and term are just one part of the conversation. There's also the decision on staying the No.2 to McDavid's No.1 or trying to be a team's leading star elsewhere."
However, after the rumors largely ceased, David Pagnotta revealed what an extension for Draisaitl could look like. During his phone interview on Hello Hockey Show, he suggested that Edmonton will likely look to sign him on a medium-term length, similar to Toronto's deal with Auston Matthews.
"They're going to continue their discussions with respect to an extension. I think there is one that can be ironed out, I just believe it's more likely. Unless something has changed since, I guess, the start of the playoffs, I think it's more likely you know to see an Auston Matthews-esque type extension: four, five-year deal or anywhere from three to five-year extension versus a full eight."
While this may not be ideal for many Edmonton fans, they can largely rest assured that Leon Draisaitl is more than likely to remain on the team for several more years. Yet, if his price is too high, it could spell trouble for the Oilers in the future.
