Oilers Oskar Klefbom officially retires from the NHL

Oscar Klefbom has announced his retirement from the National Hockey League after seven seasons.

Klefbom, 31, officially confirmed his retirement in an interview with local Swedish outlet Värmlands Folkblad his retirement after four years away from pro hockey.

Klefbom has not played since 2021 due to a shoulder injury, one he had been playing with in his final NHL season. Klefbom told multiple Swedish media outlets he had attempted to return to the ice, but could not manage pain-free.

Ranked sixth for European skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Klefbom was selected by the Oilers 19th overall. Klefbom won the IIHF World Junior Championship with Sweden in 2012, making the jump to North America in the 2013-14 NHL season.

At his peak, Klefbom was one of the league's top defensive players, as well as a key part of the Edmonton Oilers early Connor McDavid era.

Klefbom, 31, told VF that he is not closing his career in hockey, even though it is the end of his current playing career, "I don't feel old enough to sit at home and enjoy retired life.»

In 378 career NHL games played, Klefbom had 34 goals, 122 assists & 156 points, as well as 7 points in 16 career playoff games.
