The insider Pierre LeBrun shared an update on Sheldon Keefe's contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs now that he joined the New Jersey Devils organization.

When Keefe was let go by the Maple Leafs, he had a two-year contract extension set to start this summer, meaning that he could've spent the next two seasons at home, getting paid by Toronto.

However, he decided to accept an offer with the New Jersey Devils, less than a month after leaving the Leafs.

Since then, even if the coaching staff's salary doesn't count on the team's salary cap, some people have been wondering how the Leafs would be affected financially by Keefe, now that he's with the Devils.

Pierre LeBrun confirmed in a post on X that the Leafs are now completely off the hook regarding Keefe's salary.

The coach signed a four-year contract with the Devils, and it was decided that the two years in Toronto would be forgotten, as New Jersey gave him a better deal to compensate.

"Of note with NJ making the Sheldon Keefe hire official, the Leafs are 100 percent off the hook financially. Keefe's 2-year extension with the Leafs was ripped up as part of the Devils giving him a fresh, 4-year deal which pays more. Leafs won't owe anything as part of it all."

While it wouldn't have made a big difference for the Leafs organization to pay Keefe for two more seasons, it's great to know that they'll be able to use that money for something else.
