With the shocking news that Jacob Trouba was potentially being placed on waivers, and/or a trade was imminent shook the hockey world, and there's only a few hours left before the NHL finds itself with a conclusion to this developing story.
There are several teams who could benefit from Trouba albeit at a bit of a cost, and reports from around the NHL have narrowed it down to three teams: Buffalo, Detroit, and Columbus.
Ottawa was initially thought to be part of the group however dropped out according to insider Darren Dreger, and now it's down to a trio of struggling clubs.
Trouba being brought into these clubs seems a bit perplexing at first glance, given that he would be going from a potential playoff push in a huge market to potentially being part of a rebuild.
But with a rebuild in place, teams need hard-nosed veterans who can help bring the youth together and teach them the ins and outs while also keeping them in check.
Trouba has been around long enough in the league to be considered one of those vets, and any team benefits from his wealth of experience.
Drafted by Winnipeg ninth overall in 2012, Trouba has had a bit of a contentious career so far to say the least.
No doubt a gamechanger statistically, he does come with a bit of a reputation as a dirty player.
Facing multiple fines, suspensions, and being on the giving end of some dubious hits; it's a double-edged swords for teams.
For his career, Trouba has 315 points in 772 games spent with Winnipeg and New York. After his first six seasons with the Jets, he was traded to New York where he's been their captain since 2022.
He follows a trend of Rangers captains to be let go during the season as well, in a striking bit of coincidence according to Peter Baugh of The Athletic.
GM Chris Drury understands why Trouba might be frustrated both as a player and as a captain and the Rangers are worse than their record indicates with their hot start a flash in the pan; having lost six of their last seven.
While nothing is certain as of yet, with the team scratching their captain and rumblings of a trade imminent; the clock is ticking for the Rangers to make a move.
