With Ottawa set to take part in the next NHL Global Series overseas in November, Garrioch was recalling the last time the Senators took part in overseas hockey. That was in 2017, when the head coach was Guy Boucher. It was an extremely disappointing year for Ottawa.
"The reason the Sens were so bad after returning from Sweden is Guy Boucher was so convinced he and the players were exhausted they essentially quit practicing. Rest was no weapon. That's why the year went off the rails," Garrioch posted on his Twitter account.
Bobby Ryan, who played for the Sens that season, doesn't see it that way at all, and he was quick to point that out.
"WTF are you talking about, Bruce?" Ryan replied.
Garrioch tried to keep the conversation playful by telling Ryan not to be like his co-hosts on his current podcast. Ryan didn't take that well, either.
"Not sure which one you're talking about as I tell them both daily they are knobs but don't say something that asinine when I can name about 5 things that mattered more during that season," responded Ryan.
The Senators failed to make the playoffs that season after making it to the Conference Finals the year before. Boucher would be fired the season after. As has been well documented, one of the major issues for Ottawa that year was a locker-room divide that involved Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman, and their respective spouses. Karlsson's wife ended up getting a protective order against Hoffman's partner.
