After falling to the No. 7 spot in the 2023 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers took a chance on Russian prospect Matvei Michkov, but was it the right move? It appears even those in the Flyers organization are now asking the same question.
A risky move
Despite all of the talent, there was a reason why Michkov fell to the Flyers at No. 7, and GM Danny Briere has opened up on the risk that it was to take him with that pick.
Are we scared? Yes, like everyone else. That's probably why he fell to us at #7.
We hope and trust that one day he'll want to come and play. We know he wants to play in the NHL, but a lot of things have to fall into place.
It's going to be a long time before anyone knows if it was a stroke of genius or a risk too big for Philadelphia, but it's very surprising to see Briere open up in this way so early in Michkov's tenure in Philly.
Untapped potential
Just a few games into his KHL run in 2023-24, Michkov has already been benched by his team SKA St. Petersburg, and now, this questioning from Briere could no doubt get into the 18-year old's head.
Still, the potential is there, and if the 18-year old can continue to work his way through the KHL, improving on the perceived criticism's of his game, there's no doubting that he could one day end up being a major star in the NHL.
