In the Karlsson trade, the Pens had to part with Jeff Petry and Jan Rutta, two defensemen. Now, they might be looking to fill the void in defensive depth caused by their departures.
They have several options, but they're likely to sign PTOs (professional tryouts) before the next season begins.
PTOs don't always work out, but in some instances, they can be a real home run. There are still many good candidates without a contract in the NHL. Here are some of them:
The defenseman missed the entire last season after suffering an Achilles injury. He never got the chance to play for the Detroit Red Wings, who had signed him just a week before his injury. Many teams are hesitant to sign him because he was a sixth defenseman for most of his career and missed the entire last season. He could be an excellent option for the Pens' third pair if he can return at 100%.
Koekkoek, 29, also missed the entire last season, but it was due to anxiety issues. He hasn't made any announcements about a potential return, but if he were to come back, a PTO would be the way to go. The defenseman is known for his speed, which is precisely what the Pens need.
The former fifth overall pick hasn't had the start he hoped for in the NHL. After seven seasons, at 25 years old, Puljujarvi has never found his rhythm in the big league. He scored 114 points in 334 games with the Oilers and the Hurricanes. Rumors suggest he may play in Europe next season, but Dubas might be tempted to take the small risk of offering him a PTO.
Do you think Dubas will sign any of these players to a PTO?
