Now, it appears the Penguins are ready to move on, no matter the method.
When Ron Hextall acquired veteran defenseman Jeff Petry, as well as former 1st round pick Ryan Poehling from the Montreal Canadiens, it didn't seem like a disaster.
Giving up underperforming defenseman Mike Matheson and a fourth round pick, the deal seemed almost fair, which was the best Hextall could really do.
Unfortunately, Matheson performed incredibly well in a massive role in Montreal. As for Poehling, he was let go for nothing and signed with rival Philadelphia in free agency.
Petry is quickly regressing, and reports now indicate that he could be put on the waiver wire if a trade can't come to fruition.
While it would close a not-so-great chapter of Penguins history, getting absolutely nothing for Mike Matheson isn't great. Petry's big cap hit certainly makes him a tough asset to own.
