Recently, a trade scenario has surfaced with fans considering the possibility of bringing John Gibson to Pittsburgh.
This proposal is interesting as it questions what else needs to be added from the Penguins' side to get the deal to go through.
Comparing Jarry to Gibson, Jarry has the better statistics. Last year, Jarry had a 2.90 GAA and a .909 sv% while Gibson had a 3.99 GAA and a .899 sv%. However, it must be noted that Anaheim's defense did not help Gibson out at all last year.
Common speculation is that if Gibson gets put onto a team with average defense, he is an above-average goaltender statistically.
At this stage in his career, Jeff Carter is merely a cap dump. He will be making $3.125m next year but only produced 29 points last season. Moving him out would save Pittsburgh some valuable cap space which they could use on whomever they felt made their team better.
So what does Pittsburgh add?
The value between Jarry and Gibson is relatively close considering Jarry is younger and cheaper but considering Carter is included, the Penguins would have to part with a bit more. That value can be determined based on picks alone.
At most, the difference is 2nd and 3rd round pick but it could certainly be less like only a 2nd round pick. At the end of the day, that would be up to Kyle Dubas and Pat Verbeek to decide what that value is but there is certainly a solid foundation with this proposed trade.
