It was a terrible turn of events for Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin as thieves robbed his residence and made off with some pretty important and priceless valuables.

For Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin, it was a very rough and unavoidable situation as the three-time Stanley Cup winner had his residence broken into this past weekend.

While it's unknown the exact circumstances, it was revealed that his backdoor had been broken open, and that his security measures at the time (alarms and surveillance devices) were malfunctioning and not in operation at the time of the break in.

The thieves made off with various items, but none more priceless and valuable than Malkin's three Stanley Cup rings. It was also mentioned his safe was open at the time of the break-in as well.

The incident occurred during Pittsburgh's game on Jan. 11 against the Ottawa Senators, with a 911 call happening a few hours post-game.

KDKA-TV reports that Allegheny County Police are investigating a robbery in the general area of Malkin's residence and are asking anyone with any information to please step forward and assist authorities.

In a striking bit of news as well, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued warnings to all professional sports leagues to be extra vigilant regarding the safety and security of their superstars, as there seems to be a targeted effort to go after these particular players.

Malkin lives in the Sewickley Heights area in Pennsylvania, one of the wealthiest and most prominent areas in not only the State but the entirety of the US.

This season, Malkin has eight goals and 24 assists for the Penguins, and has won not only three Cups but also a Calder, Art Ross, Hart, Conn Smythe and Lester B. Pearson award in his career.

He has 506 goals and 822 assists in 1186 games; all spent with Pittsburgh since being drafted second overall in 2004.
