Insider Reports Another Mikko Rantanen Blockbuster Trade Could be in the Works
NHL Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli believes that Mikko Rantanen could be on the move once again after concerns he may not re-sign with the Carolina Hurricanes.
When Mikko Rantanen was first traded, it sent shockwaves through the NHL as it proved that anybody, on any given day can be traded. Colorado wasn't willing to pay him, and shipped him to Carolina (with a quick pitstop in Chicago).
He could make shockwaves once again if NHL Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli is to be believed.
So it leads us to question -- will Mikko Rantanen be on the move again?
Report: Mikko Rantanen May Be Traded Again Per Frank Seravalli
Speaking on the newest episode of The Daily Faceoff Show, Seravalli touched on the possibility of Rantanen being dealt again if Carolina can't convince him to stay:
They gave him some time to get used to the market and get your feet wet, understand what it's like here [Carolina].
But this two-week stretch during 4 Nations is going to be really telling. If this gets closer to March 7, and they have a feeling he won't sign. I wouldn't be shocked.
They've got an owner just crazy enough to turn around and say 'Let's see what we can get back.' Especially if his production remains relatively limited.
Of course they're going to give it all the time in the world you try so hard to get your hands on a difference maker. If he doesn't want to sign and is unproductive, it's not really a good fit.
Seravalli is referring to owner Tom Dundon, and while he may not be as crazy as Seravalli is alluding to -- he wants to win and if Rantanen can't bring that to his team, what's the use of keeping him?
Rantanen, for what it's worth through all this trade drama, has had a very good season thus far.
In 55 games with Colorado and Carolina, Rantanen has 26 goals and 40 assists while adding a 53.3% faceoff win percentage as well as a plus-13.
Rantanen is expected to command upwards of $14M per season for his next deal, and will no doubt have his fair share of suitors -- but it's going to cost a LOT.
If Carolina decides that Mikko Rantanen isn't a good fit and he doesn't feel like he fits in either then it's beneficial for both parties to move on.
Someone is going to be crazy enough to pay a ransom for Rantanen -- and Carolina is crazy enough to take the deal.
