Sidney Crosby has just turned 37 years old, and the expectation was that the Pittsburgh Penguins were going to wait for his birthday to announce his contract extension, however that was far from the case.
Penguins insider Mark Madden of 105.9 The X reported that he had strong sources who were certain that the extension announcement was going to be made on Crosby's birthday, so when that was not the case, many fans were left gutted.
The Penguins made a social media post on X, wishing Crosby a happy birthday, however one important component was missing: contract extension news. There was absolutely no mention, nor even a hint that anything was remotely close, which was the total opposite of what Mark Madden had predicted.
It is going to be very shocking if the Penguins and Crosby don't get a deal done. Crosby has been the face of the franchise since he began his career in 2005, and likely would want to retire as a Penguin.
There are however many out there that feel Crosby is strongly considering going to a different team because he knows his time to win a Stanley Cup is limited, and the Penguins are far from major contenders. If Crosby truly wants a crack at another deep playoff run, it would likely have to be in a different city.
There is also one other reasoning behind why Crosby hasn't signed an extension yet, and fans won't like hearing this, but that could be because Crosby may consider hanging up the skates after next season. He will be 38 years old next summer, and many players have retired at that age, so if more time goes on and no extension happens, the thought of possible retirement could also start creeping in Crosby's head.
Patience will be key here, as Crosby still has this upcoming season to play for the Penguins, so while there is no absolute immediate rush to get an extension done, fans hearts will be racing more and more with each passing day.
Sidney Crosby has played in 1,272 games in his career, all with the Penguins, and has tallied 592 goals and 1,596 points. He's also played in 180 career playoff games, scoring 71 goals and 201 points, with several Stanley Cups under his belt. What a truly legendary player.
