Many teams have been linked to him, with both Carolina and Pittsburgh reportedly chasing him the hardest, but it looks like they aren't alone, as another Eastern Conference team could be putting together a package to land the three-time Norris Trophy winner.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were again one of the best teams in the NHL last season, but failed to make a deep playoff run, and with plenty of star power in their forward group, it could be time to make a splash on the blue line. While few people have linked William Nylander to San Jose, he's the only member of the 'core four' that doesn't have a no movement clause, and now, Editor in Leaf have taken this opportunity to send him away in order to land the star defenceman.
The first trade proposal sees Toronto send William Nylander, Matt Murray, prospect Ryan Tverberg, defense prospect Mikko Kokkonen, a 2024 conditional first round draft pick (top 10 protected), and a 2026 third round draft pick to San Jose in exchange for Karlsson.
The second trade proposal sees William Nylander and TJ Brodie heading to San Jose for Karlsson, with the final trade being a one-for-one swap with Mitch Marner, who would waive his no-trade clause for the move.
Given that the market for Karlsson is extensive at this point, if the Maple Leafs wanted to land the former division rival in a trade, they may need to give up much more than this, and with Carolina and Pittsburgh both looking to land him, we could see a major bidding war coming up.
