The Toronto Maple Leafs will have a major boost to tonight's lineup vs the Montreal Canadiens with Ilya Samsonov appearing to have his first game for Toronto since signing an extension with the Leafs in Arbitration.
According to the Leafs practice lines, Samsonov played as the starting Goalie for tonight's rivalry preseason matchup against the Canadiens, with Keith Petruzzelli as the backup.
Samsonov, who got a one-year deal in Arbitration, appears poised to make his first start with the Leafs since the signing, his first look at action with Samsonov having spent time focusing on getting back into game action, working with Leafs Goaltending Coach Curtis Sanford.
Likely, Samsonov and Petruzzelli will split minutes in tonight's game, but it hasn't been announced if that will happen, although it has happened in the Leafs other preseason games.
Samsonov, 26, was a breakout player for the Leafs last season, winning the starting role for Toronto in a battle with fellow newcomer Matt Murray. In 42 Games for the Leafs in 22-23, Samsonov had a 27-10-5 record with a 2.33 GAA and a .919 SV%.
Montreal will start G Cayden Primeau in net for tonight's game.
