At the last trade deadline, former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas brought in Luke Schenn to help the team in the playoffs.
Following a second-round exit at the hands of the Florida Panthers, Schenn hit the free-agent market and eventually signed a three-year, $2,750,000 AAV contract with the Nashville Predators.
With restricted cap space in Toronto, Brad Treliving couldn't really afford to sign him at this price.
Instead, Treliving got William Lagesson and John Klingberg. Things didn't turn out well for Klingberg, who will likely miss the remainder of the season due to an injury, but Lagesson has been impressive so far.
The thin depth on the Leafs' blue line still worries fans. Many would love to see Schenn back in Toronto. However, statistics show that Schenn is currently struggling.
Schenn Struggles: Treliving Escaped a Bad Signing
Schenn has been having a hard time this year.
Last night, in a 5-2 loss against the Vancouver Canucks, Schenn hit an all-time low. He was the worst player for his team, as you can see in the following chart:
Leafs fans wouldn't have liked to see those numbers if he had signed his $2,750,000 AAV contract in Toronto.
Of course, this is only one game. There aren't a lot of players who play 82 perfect games in a season, and they earn way more than $2.75M.
