With the Leafs' future in disarray, many are starting to look for answers on who will be the next GM for the team. That has led NHL insider Elliotte Friedman to reveal the following:
With Beregevin being a potential top candidate for the Leafs filling in all of the qualifications they would want, it looks like he would be a top option for them. The Leafs are looking to compete for a cup and Bergevin has proven he can build a team that gets to the finals.
The short answer is no. The long answer is that it's complicated. While there are many qualified candidates on the market like Brad Treliving, Eric Tulsky, or even Brandon Pridham, none of those candidates have been the GM of a top-three market in the NHL like Bergevin.
The possibility of bringing in Bergevin would rely on the faith that he would build a team that can win the cup and when the odds he does that are about the same as the odds he blows the team up, it is a high-risk/high reward move. Bergevin would likely be the GM for less than 5 years before moving on but if he can lead the Leafs to the cup, it will be worth it.
