Insider reveals Matt Murray's Fate for Next Season
Regardless of how much longer the Toronto Maple Leafs go in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, it's a safe bet goaltender Matt Murray won't get a chance between the pipes unless they have absolutely no other choice. Whether the Leafs are eliminated in this round, or stage a miracle comeback and go deeper, the offseason brings the question of what happens to Murray, who has one year left at $6.25 million, a cap hit Toronto could do without given his recent performances. An Insider has a prediction.
Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff appeared on a podcast earlier today, and said he believes Murray will go on long-term injury reserve, meaning his salary won't count towards the cap.
It may be the best option for both sides. The only issue is, as far as anyone knows, Murray is capable of playing right now, if Toronto was left with no other choice. However, it's worth noting that both Shea Weber and Carey Price played every game of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs with the Montreal Canadiens, including the five games of the final round that resulted in a 4-1 series loss to Tampa Bay. Neither has played in the NHL since.
