After handing out a record deal to Auston Matthews this summer, many fans were concerned about the cap crunch that was coming, but now, the NHL's commissioner has made a comment that could be music to Leafs fans ears.

A major cap jump

According to Gary Bettman, the NHL salary cap is expected to rise to between $87 and $88 million ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Gary Bettman after Board of Governors meeting says he told owners the very preliminary revenue projections suggests a salary cap bump to between $87 M and $88 M for 2024-25 next year

This would mark a solid rise of between $4.5 and 5 million, allowing many GM's the much needed flexibility to continue adding to their rosters in pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

Enough to keep Nylander?

Reportedly, the discussions between the Maple Leafs and William Nylander this summer have been solid, but with their lack of cap space, a move has been difficult to make, as Nylander reportedly wanted around $2 million per season more than Toronto wanted to pay.

Now, while this rise in cap space may make the Maple Leafs look elsewhere, it now gives them the opportunity to get Nylander at a much more palatable price, and while a trade is still a possibility, this is the best news possible for those wanting #88 to remain in Toronto.
