It will be a situation to monitor closely.
A lot of things are currently happening with the Maple Leafs. There's of course the William Nylander situation, the salary arbitration filing from Ilya Samsonov or the salary cap problems.
However, another huge news regarding Auston Matthews just came in...
Major turn of events with Auston Matthews contract negotiations
According to David Pagnotta from the Fourth Period, nothing is close between Auston Matthews and the Leafs as he doesn't want to take anything more than 5 years.
I can tell you with respect to Auston Matthews, nothing is close. They're not there yet, it's either a 3, maybe a 4 or 5-year contract. He will not exceed 5 years.
What's best for Toronto?
Of course, extending Matthews will be a priority.
However, the fact that he doesn't want to take anything more than 5 years indicates maybe that he doesn't want to be a Maple Leaf' for the rest of his career.
Will Toronto be forced to trade him at one point? Let's see!
Last season, Matthews registered 85 points in 74 games. He will enter next season the last year of his contract signed in 2019.
