Maple Leafs First Round Pick Makes a Major Decision on His Future
As the Toronto Maple Leafs concentrate on trying to mount a comeback in their second round NHL playoff series against the Florida Panthers, one of their best prospects has made a decision on his immediate future. According to Championat.com, Rodion Amirov, drafted 15th overall in 2020, will spend next season at home in Russia.
Amirov to Remain Overseas
Amirov has signed a one-year extension with Salavat Yulaev of the KHL. He played 10 games for the team in 2020-21. Amirov did not play at all last season. It was revealed in February of 2022 that he was getting treatment for a brain tumor. At last check, he was expected to make a full recovery.
Amirov, who is 21, already signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Leafs in April of 2021. He spent some time with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL at that time, but ended up returning to Russia to play. He is considered to be one of Toronto's top prospects that has yet to play for the team.
