In Brad Treliving's first offseason with the Maple Leafs he made several major moves.
Defensively he brought in John Klingberg. Klingberg has struggled and is not out indefinitely with an injury.
Offensively several additions were made. Ryan Reaves, Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, and David Kampf were all brought in. All of these additions have failed to live up to expectations. Each has been the focus of the Maple Leafs' fans frustrations at some point.
Despite all of these disappointments from Treliving, they pale in comparison to one move that Treliving did not make.
The biggest mistake by Brad Treliving is one that has the potential to ruin the future of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Treliving failed to ink William Nylander to a contract extension this offseason. This has led to speculation and major frustration from fans. Compounding on this is the fact that Nylander has been spectacular on a 17-game point streak from the start of the year that just ended.
With this spectacular play, William Nylander has driven his price up immensely. His price increasing puts the Maple Leafs in a difficult position with little cap space to spare already. Treliving will either need to overpay Nylander now or trade him for less than he is likely worth.
Either way Maple Leafs nation will be critical of Treliving's handling of this situation once a resolution is reached.
