Friedman Reveals Toronto's Plan
Top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman is known for giving the fans vital updates regarding their favorite team and he has once again pulled through. He shared with the public what the Leafs' plan for Matt Murray is.
"It doesn't sound like Matt Murray is tradable at this point due to his health; LTIR and a buyout are the two likely remaining options." - Friedman
Which Should The Leafs Do?
The clear better choice would be to send Matt Murray to the notorious Robidas Island. For those who do not know what that means, Robidas Island is a term coined after Stephane Robidas was placed on LTIR and then never played an NHL game with the Leafs again. Another term for this would LTIRetired.
Placing Murray on LTIR accomplishes two things that a buyout would not. First off, it would clear the Leafs of any money counting against the cap. This would free up Murray's entire cap hit which they could not accomplish with a buyout.
Secondly, it would guarantee it only affects them this year. They will not have to pay a buyout penalty next year if they decide to do so. On top of this, the Leafs could keep him on LTIR the entire season and then activate him come playoff time if they are short a goaltender.
However, if Murray is healthy enough, the Leafs may need to resort to a buyout.
