The Toronto Maple Leafs face some significant decisions concerning the salary cap as they approach the next season.
Leafs Part Ways With Two Prospects
Every season requires teams to decide who to retain and who they can afford to let go. It is believed that there are two prospects the Leafs are unlikely to re-sign this season: Josh Pillar and Kalle Loponen.
Pillar & Loponen Not Likely Part Of The Future
Josh Pillar, a 21-year-old player, was originally picked by the Minnesota Wild in the 4th round, as the 127th overall pick in the 2021 draft. He came to the Leafs via the Ryan O'Reilly trade.
On the other hand, Kalle Loponen, now 22 years old, was a 7th round pick by the Leafs, chosen 204th overall in the 2019 NHL draft.
These decisions demonstrate the complex balancing act teams must manage between developing young talent and managing salary caps.
